Razzle Dazzle:

This laptop belongs to the Dell Mini 10 family but the looks are different from other members there. The hinge is located on the system’s rear and the entire body tilts forward. The exterior is made of glossy plastic and the rounded corners give the laptop a consumer friendly and relaxed look.

Inside Dope:

Dell Inspiron Mini iM1012-687OBK belongs to the family Dell’s famous Inspiron Mini 10 series and the looks are quite identical to the other two models that we reviewed some time ago. You will have to dig a bit in to the features for choosing the right notebook according to your needs. At $409, you get a high definition Mini 10 with an HD display and video accelerator graphics chip and for $369 comes with similar features including a larger hard drive.

Dell Inspiron Mini iM1012-687OBK costs $349 and thus it is the least expensive of the trio. You can configure the system online for $299, you get a 160 GB hard drive, Intel Atom N450 CPU and upgrade to 802.11n Wi-Fi through Dell’s online configuration system. Recommending an expensive system is not easy but we will advise you to buy this notebook if you can afford to burn extra money and if you don’t have enough patience. (It takes ten days for a configured system to be delivered)

This Dell Netbook is quite similar to other Netbooks that you’d find in the market. Samsung NP-N210-JA02US has a really good touch pad and Asus 1005PEB has good keyboard. Dell Inspiron Mini iM1012-687OBK has a good keyboard too, all the important keys like Shift and TAB aren’t slimmed down. Lots of Netbooks are currently moving towards island type keyboard which is a bit better to type on since there is plenty of spacing between them and hence mishits are minimized.

Touch pad of the Dell Inspiron Mini iM1012-687OBK is short but wide and it resembles the elongated pad which is often found on HP Netbooks. There are no separate buttons for the mouse; you will have to use the right and left corners for this. We prefer having two separate buttons for the mouse. The short height of the pad also makes it difficult to scroll through large documents.

Dell Inspiron Mini iM1012-687OBK, just like most Dells has a software dock which is seen on Mac computers. This is not a must have but you will appreciate it for the short cuts to applications it offers, like security, networking and other such control panels. You get a set of applications for it but you cannot add your own.

The display of the Dell Inspiron Mini iM1012-687OBK is 10.1 inch long and gives a resolution of 1024×600 pixels which is often found in low end Netbooks. Lots of 10 and 11 inch Netbooks are increasingly moving towards a bigger 1,366×768 pixel resolution and this doesn’t drive up the cost either, they remain below $399.

Dell Inspiron Mini iM1012-687OBK, just like Asus and Samsung models, doesn’t have 802.11n Wi-Fi. All three don’t have Bluetooth either which is unforgivable for $349 priced Netbook.

Internal components are standard of Netbook, this machine comes with Windows 7 Starter Edition, 1GB of RAM and 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor. The performance is also the same as compared to other Netbooks which have the same configuration. Dell Inspiron Mini iM1012-687OBK will perform well as long as you know what to expect from a Netbook. We did light multimedia playback, e-mail and Web surfing and the Netbook performed well.

The Dell Inspiron Mini iM1012-687OBK ran for a little less than seven hours in our battery drain tests which is really impressive. Our battery drain tests are grueling; you can expect more from light usage. If you don’t care much for speed and just need a big battery life, then every Netbook having N450 processor will be impressive because the chip is very economical in power usage.

The Dell Inspiron Mini iM1012-687OBK comes with a one year warranty that covers parts and labor. For $99 more, you can upgrade the warranty to three years and it includes on-site service. You can visit the manufacturer’s Website for driver downloads, online knowledge base and toll free phone number.

Nitty Gritty:

There are two main points which are worth mentioning here, big battery life and smaller hard drive. If you are looking for big battery life and don’t mind the small storage space, then get this Netbook.
